I have to admit, it was a project at work that got me into this, but the joy of learning and play that have kept me going. I am working on learning Ruby to create a barter credits application that interacts with a USB scanner. Since we’ve been thinking about getting a scanner at home for a while in order to streamline addition of books to our personal library catalogs, this was the perfect excuse! As you might have guessed, I have been scanning books all day, when I haven’t been playing with the slow process of learning a new programming language. Life’s simple pleasures, eh?

I spent a little while today cleaning off a shelf of old (let me repeat, OLD) computer stuff. For your entertainment, here’s a photo of some of the great items I found dating from 1990-1994. Anyone need a spare 4 megs of RAM?!?

I am in the midst of reading through Opening Doors: Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, and am hoping to write up a full post on the subject in the next few days. In the meantime, though, here’s some food for thought: the cost of a day of hospitalization ~$2,000, where as the cost of providing supportive housing is ~$30/day.

Update: Other commentaries have been more complete than mine would have been, so I’ll leave it to the professionals.

I have not yet fully determined what personality I hope to bring to this new blog. Until I stumble upon the answer, check out my MLIS Portfolio.
